The Vilonia High School Cross Country teams are sponsoring the second annual Fly Like an Eagle 5K on April 18. Proceeds from the race support the cross country program, which draws about 50 students (seventh through 12th grades) each year. These funds are used to buy T-shirts and hoodies that identify them as part of the program, and for meals and lodging when the team travels.
The race benefits the cross country teams, but it is a road race. The course is completely contained within the main campus of the Vilonia School District. Several runners have clocked their personal best time on the flat and fast course.
Participants all receive atechnical event T-shirt, and the top three male and female runners receive awards to mark their achievement. There will also be a one mile kids fun run that begins immediately after the 5K. All kids who cross the finish line of the fun run receive a finishers medal.
The two-loop course is certified, and this year, officials have contracted with Arkansasrunner.com to chip time the race to give participants an even better experience. The race begins in front of Vilonia High School and finishes on the track in Phillip Weaver Stadium.
